Festival Fashion

Festival season is just around the corner and there’s a whole new set of fashion rules for 2011.  Gone are the days when all you needed was a tutu and a family sized pack of face paints to get festival fashion right – nowadays it takes some serious forward planning and some smart fashion buys.  You might be living out of a rucksack, inside a scrap of canvas in a field, but it’s still a catwalk out there.

If you invested in some denim shorts last year then hold on to them for 2011.  Wear them loose and tomboyish like these faded denim Acne shorts £119 (with a T-shirt and pumps), or tight and cut high for that Daisy Duke look:

And if you want to revamp your high-waisted jeans for summer, chop them off at the thigh and wear with dark ankle boots for a serious rock chic vibe.

Playsuits and jumpsuits are HUGE this summer!  They’ve been gaining ground through winter and are now the wardrobe staple for 2011.  If you’re confident it’s going to be a hot summer then go for a short one – loose and flippy, rather than skin tight.  Alternatively, for maximum glamour, get your hands on a full-length jumpsuit and belt it in the middle.  Because they’re so popular, playsuits and jumpsuits come in an array of designs this summer, including colourful Chinoiserie prints, pretty white shorts, floaty and feminine, or full length and elegant – these playsuits and jumpsuits are from www.boohoo.com, which has a great selection from £15.

The next big trend for 2011, that has already made it onto the festival circuit at the likes of Coachella, is the midi skirt.  Wear it high on the waist, in a muted beige (like this lovely Mango pleated skirt £74.90) or choose a rust colour like this New Look version (£24.99), which might be more practical.  Or be bold with acid brights like summer’s ‘IT’ skirt, the bright pink Whistles Carrie (£95).

Team your midi with a plain white T-shirt or vest for the ultimate in cool, or if you’re looking for a serious festival tan then brave a skimpy bandeau.

If you fancy something sweeping (perfect for keeping your ankles toasty on those chilly nights) then plump for another summer staple – the maxi.  Maxi dresses come in everything from halterneck, to strapless, and maxi skirts should be worn high on the waist with a skinny belt, and sandals or wedges (not too high – you’re in a field remember!).  For a grungier look, pick a long, floral print maxi and wear with flat ankle boots like Minkpink’s Latter Day Floral Bandeau Maxi Dress (£60.00):

If you prefer to wear dresses that aren’t maxi, keep them preppy, preferably in lace like this cream lace stripe dress (£28) from Dorothy Perkins.

At some point your festival fashion wardrobe needs a practical item or two – frozen blue is not this season’s colour!  A scarf will keep you warm in the evenings, or protect your head from the sun if you don’t have a hat – tasseled, brightly printed, or dark and rocky are all good options, or go for H&M’s festival fashion against AIDS collection, scarf, (£7.99) (above).  When darkness falls, cosy up inside a cool parka like this Khaki one from Topshop (£70):

To finish off your festival look, accessorize with a silk printed headscarf, or hat (trilby or big, floppy 70s hat like this maroon version £22 from ASOS), a boxy cross body bag like this Nica Alicia Medium Cross Body Bag (£22 ASOS), ankle socks and layers of grungy chains.
